Past, Present, Future Tarot — a free three-card spread

The moment you press "Shuffle", your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) sets the order of all 78 cards and whether each one is upright or reversed. The shuffle is Fisher–Yates, which makes every order equally likely, and the tiny bias that the modulo operation can introduce is removed. Whichever card you tap in the fan, the odds are the same — picking is kept as a ritual for focusing on your question.

A card that lands upside down is reversed, and it is usually read as that card's energy being blocked, delayed, excessive or lacking. The Sun upright means success and joy; reversed, it means joy that is briefly hidden. Many readers don't use reversals, so if you turn off "Include reversed cards" before shuffling, every card comes out upright.

A card of the day is something you ask once as the day begins and reflect on until it ends, so drawing again until you like the card defeats the purpose. That's why you get one card per day by this device's date, and you'll see the same card if you come back. After midnight you can draw a new one. The other spreads can be drawn again at any time.

Each of the 78 cards is assigned yes, maybe or no. Cards of movement and opening (The Sun, The Star, The World, Ace of Cups and so on) mean yes; cards of pausing or waiting (The Hanged Man, The Moon, Two of Swords and so on) mean maybe; cards of loss or conflict (The Tower, Three of Swords, Five of Pentacles and so on) mean no. A reversed card is read one step lower: yes becomes maybe, and maybe becomes no.

When you draw three or more cards, it applies the things tarot readers look for when they first scan a spread. If half or more are Major Arcana, the matter is part of a bigger current; if there are none, it's something you can change yourself. It also looks at the most common suit (Wands for work and passion, Cups for feelings and relationships, Swords for thoughts and conflict, Pentacles for money and practical matters), repeated numbers, and the share of court cards and reversals. For each position, read the card's meaning in the light of that position.

It has 22 Major Arcana cards (from 0, The Fool, to 21, The World), which stand for big currents and stages of life, and 56 Minor Arcana cards for everyday matters. The Minor Arcana has four suits — Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles — each with number cards from Ace to Ten and court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King. Names and meanings follow the widely used Rider–Waite tradition, and the artwork is a set of simple designs drawn for this site.

Tarot is less a tool for predicting the future than a game and a way to reflect: randomly drawn images and symbols prompt you to look at your situation from a different angle.
