Severance pay calculator

Korea's statutory severance pay for leaving after a year or more of service, based on your wages for the last three months (average wage).

KRW
KRW
KRW
Estimated severance (pre-tax)
—
Enter your start date, leaving date and 3 months' wages.

Formula Daily average wage = (3 months' wages + annual bonus × 3/12 + leave pay × 3/12) ÷ 89–92 days; severance = daily average wage × 30 × (days of service ÷ 365). If the average wage is below the ordinary wage, the ordinary wage is used, but this form handles the average wage only. Actual payouts depend on company rules and the retirement pension type (DC/DB), and retirement income tax is deducted separately.

Unused leave pay

What you're paid for annual leave you couldn't use: unused days × daily ordinary wage.

Leave pay (pre-tax)
—
Enter your ordinary wage and unused leave days.

Formula Daily ordinary wage = ordinary hourly wage × daily hours; leave pay = daily ordinary wage × unused days. On a monthly salary, ordinary hourly wage = monthly ordinary wage ÷ contracted monthly hours (usually 209). What counts toward the ordinary wage depends on each allowance, so check your company's employment rules first.

Enter the principal, fee rate and term.

Note Methods vary by bank and product: some cap the remaining term at 3 years, some charge a flat rate regardless of days left, and some waive the fee after 3 years. Confirm the exact amount with your loan agreement and bank.

Pyeong · Square metres (㎡)

1 pyeong = 3.305785㎡ (exactly 400/121). Converts the Korean real-estate unit to and from square metres.

Note A "national housing size" apartment in Korea has at most 85㎡ (about 25.7 pyeong) of exclusive floor area. Advertised pyeong usually counts supply area (exclusive + shared residential), so it is larger than the exclusive area.

D-day · Date calculator

Counts the days until a target date and the gap between two dates.

Days left
—
Enter a date.

Note A D-day counts the start date as day 0, while anniversaries (like 100 days together) count the first day as day 1. To work out an age from a date of birth, use the age calculator.

Loan interest · Amortizing payments

Monthly payment and total interest for a loan repaid in equal monthly instalments (principal + interest).

Monthly payment
—
Enter the amount, rate and term.

Formula Monthly payment = principal × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where r = annual rate ÷ 12 and n = months. A simple calculation that ignores early repayment, grace periods and fees.

Note From a VAT-inclusive total, net price = total ÷ 1.1 and tax = total ÷ 11. Exemptions, simplified taxation and zero rating are not reflected.

Take-home pay (estimate)

Estimates what lands in your account each month after Korea's four social insurances and income tax. A rough calculation that will differ from your actual pay.

—
Enter your annual or monthly salary.

Note Estimated with National Pension 4.75%, health insurance 3.595%, long-term care at 13.14% of the health premium and employment insurance 0.9% (2026 rates), plus income and local income tax from a simplified withholding table. The pension applies the monthly income cap of KRW 6.59 million and floor of KRW 410,000 (announced July 2026), so high earners pay less than the plain rate suggests. Actual amounts vary with dependant deductions, year-end tax settlement and non-taxable items.

Maturity payout (after tax)
—
Enter the amount, rate and term.

Formula Deposit, simple = principal × annual rate × (months/12). Deposit, monthly compound = principal × (1 + annual rate/12)^months − principal.
For a savings plan with simple interest, each deposit sits for a different length of time: only the first instalment earns interest for the full term and the last earns one month (interest = monthly amount × monthly rate × n(n+1)/2). This is the same method banks use.
Tax Interest income tax 14% + local income tax 1.4% = 15.4% is withheld from interest (rounded down to the won). Actual amounts may vary with the bank's day count (leap years, month ends), preferential rate conditions and early termination rates.

Hourly · Monthly · Holiday pay

Converts an hourly wage to monthly pay and back, together with Korea's weekly paid-holiday allowance, which applies once you are contracted for 15 hours or more a week.

KRW
hours
Monthly equivalent (pre-tax)
—
Enter an hourly wage or monthly pay.

Formula Paid holiday hours = weekly contracted hours ÷ 40 × 8 (up to 8 hours; 0 under 15 hours a week); monthly hours = (weekly hours + holiday hours) × 365 ÷ 7 ÷ 12, which is 209 hours for a 40-hour week. Korea's minimum wage is ₩10,320 an hour in 2026 and ₩10,700 in 2027. Overtime, night and holiday premiums are not included, and amounts are before tax and social insurance.

Unemployment benefit (job-seeking allowance)

Korea pays 60% of your pre-leaving average daily wage for 120 to 270 days, depending on your age and how long you were covered by employment insurance. The daily amount has a cap and a floor.

KRW

Estimated total benefit
—
Enter your wages for the 3 months before leaving.

Who qualifies You need at least 180 insured days in the 18 months before leaving, you must have left against your will (a recommended resignation, the end of a contract or a closure), and you must be actively looking for work. If you quit on your own, you qualify only for a recognised valid reason such as unpaid wages or an impossible commute.
Formula Daily benefit = daily average wage × 60%, capped at ₩68,100, with a floor of minimum hourly wage × 80% × daily contracted hours (₩66,048 for 8 hours in 2026). For leaving dates in 2027 or later only the floor is updated to the new minimum wage (₩10,700); the cap stays at ₩68,100, and if the floor is higher the floor is paid. Payments arrive 4 weeks (28 days) at a time after each unemployment check-in. The job centre decides the exact amount and eligibility.

International age calculator

Works out your age from your date of birth, along with Korea's calendar-year age and the days until your next birthday. Since 28 June 2023, Korean laws, contracts and official documents all use international age.

Age
—
Enter a date of birth.

Note Age is (this year − birth year) once your birthday has passed, minus one before it. People born on 29 February turn a year older on 1 March in non-leap years. In Korea, buying alcohol or tobacco and military service still use calendar-year age (this year − birth year). The zodiac animal follows the calendar year, so if you were born in January or early February, check whether it was before Lunar New Year (or Ipchun).

Percentage calculator

Works out a percentage of a number, what share one value is of a total, the percentage change between two values, and the value after a discount or increase.

Result
—
Enter a number.

Note Percentage change = (new − original) ÷ original × 100. Going from 10% to 15% is a 50% increase, or 5 percentage points. Raising a value by 20% and then cutting it by 20% leaves 96% of the original, not the original.

BMI calculator

Calculates your body mass index (BMI) from height and weight and gives your weight category, along with the healthy weight range for your height.

BMI (body mass index)
—
Enter your height and weight.

Categories This page uses the World Health Organization (WHO) categories: a BMI of 25 or more is overweight and 30 or more is obese. Many Asian countries set lower cut-offs because body fat and health risks rise at a lower BMI in Asian populations — Korea, for example, treats 23 as pre-obese and 25 as obese.
Note BMI is meant for adults. It misreads body fat for very muscular people and during pregnancy, and anyone 18 or under should be assessed with age- and sex-specific growth chart percentiles.

FAQ

Do I get severance for less than a year of work?
No. It requires at least one year of continuous service and an average of 15+ hours a week over four-week periods. Beyond the first year it is prorated by day (e.g. 2 years 6 months = 30 days' pay × 2.5).
How do average wage and ordinary wage differ?
Average wage is the total pay received in the three months before leaving divided by the number of days — based on what you were actually paid (including bonuses and overtime). Ordinary wage is the amount set to be paid regularly and uniformly (base pay + fixed allowances), and is the basis for leave pay and overtime. Severance uses the average wage, but if that is below the ordinary wage, the ordinary wage is used.
When is unused leave paid out?
If leave is still unused when the usage period (usually one year) ends, it is paid out on the next month's payday. However, if your company properly followed the leave-use promotion procedure and you still didn't take it, you may lose the right to claim the pay.
Is the early repayment fee ever waived?
It is usually waived once 3 years have passed since the loan started. There are also exceptions when you switch to a new policy loan (refinancing), when the bank runs a waiver promotion, or where the law provides (e.g. some low-income finance products). Some products let you repay a set share each year fee-free even within 3 years.
My savings plan pays 3.5% a year — why is the interest only about half?
With a savings plan, each monthly deposit is held for a different length of time. Only the first deposit earns interest for all 12 months; the last earns one month. So pre-tax interest on a 12-month plan is monthly amount × monthly rate × (12×13÷2), a little over half the annual rate measured against your total deposits. The "3.5% a year" is an annual rate applied only for the time each deposit is held, not a return on everything you paid in. The after-tax return on principal in the results above is what you actually take home.
What date are the converter's exchange rates from?
They are the euro reference rates the European Central Bank (ECB) publishes once every business day (around 16:00 CET). They are fetched automatically once a day and the reference date is shown on screen. They are not live rates, so moves during the day aren't reflected, and on weekends and holidays the last business day's rates stay in place.
Why do I get less than this when I exchange money at a bank?
This converter uses the mid-point between buying and selling (the reference rate). Banks charge more than this when you buy cash and pay less when you sell (the spread), and transfers carry a separate fee. A preferential rate narrows the gap. Check the actual amount with your bank.
Where does the 209-hour month come from?
It is the 40-hour week plus 8 paid holiday hours, making 48 hours, times the average number of weeks in a month (365 ÷ 7 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.345), which gives 208.6 hours, rounded to 209. Korea's monthly minimum wage (₩10,320 × 209 = ₩2,156,880 in 2026) is calculated with the same figure.
Who gets the weekly holiday allowance?
If you are contracted for 15 hours or more a week and attended every agreed workday that week, part-timers and short-hours workers get it too, including at workplaces with fewer than five employees. A 40-hour week earns one day (8 hours); shorter weeks earn weekly hours ÷ 40 × 8 hours.
Can I get unemployment benefit if I quit?
As a rule, no. But you can if there is a recognised valid reason for leaving, such as unpaid wages, pay below the minimum wage, workplace harassment, or a relocation that makes the round-trip commute three hours or more. A recommended resignation, the end of a contract or a closure counts as leaving against your will. The job centre makes the final call.
When does Korea use calendar-year age instead of international age?
Since 28 June 2023, ages in Korean laws, contracts and official documents follow international age by default. The Juvenile Protection Act (buying alcohol and tobacco) and the Military Service Act, however, keep using calendar-year age (this year − birth year), as the laws specify. That is why you can buy alcohol and tobacco from 1 January of the year you turn 19, not from your 19th birthday.
Why do BMI cut-offs differ between countries?
At the same BMI, Asian people tend to have more body fat, and their risk of diabetes and high blood pressure rises sooner. So while the WHO treats 25 or more as overweight and 30 or more as obese, the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity treats 23 or more as pre-obese and 25 or more as obese. China uses 24 and 28, and Japan uses 25. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so check your waist too (in Korea, 90 cm or more for men and 85 cm or more for women counts as abdominal obesity).
What's the difference between percent and percentage points?
A percentage point is simply the difference between two percentages. If an interest rate goes from 2% to 3%, it has risen by 1%p, but as a percentage change it has gone up (3 − 2) ÷ 2 = 50%. "Up 1%" and "up 1 percentage point" mean very different things.
Why do results differ from what I'm actually paid?
These forms are simplified estimates of the statutory rules. Actual amounts vary with company employment rules, retirement pensions (DC plans depend on contributions and returns), how bonuses are counted, taxes (retirement and earned income tax) and changes to social insurance rates. Check exact figures with your HR team, bank or a tax professional.
Are the amounts I enter saved or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations happen inside your browser. Only the last calculator you opened is remembered in this browser; inputs like salary or loan amounts are never saved or sent anywhere.
